Passion Projects

Passion Projects are tasks that year 5 & 6 kids work on to get badges. There are different badges like Art, PE and lots other fun things.
You get badges by doing tasks like helping at home and lots of other fun things.
To get my PE I did an obstacle course, I was in a rugby team for the school and I did Cross Country.

Here is a picture of the PE badge. You can see there is the Hoon Hay logo in the middle and PE at the bottom of the badge.

For the next photo I am showing you is my obstacle course that I completed as part of my PE badge.

Would you like to complete my obstacle course?

Cloze Exercises

A cloze exercise is like a tiny story. There are blank spots that you have to fill with words that are on the bottom or top of the page. Some of them are a bit hard and others are easy. There are really hard ones that you have to think of the words yourself because the words aren't on the bottom. Here are some of the cloze exercises that I have completed.

Samoan art

This year I have been doing Samoan art some of us are done and some of us are not. I'm not but most other people are. When I first saw it I thought it would be easy but it has taken almost 2 terms to finish. These are the steps how I made the first piece of art:

Step 1: I got a piece of paper and practise to draw a turtle.
Step 2: I got a piece of cardboard and drew a turtle Step 3: I got super glue and string and then I glued the string onto the lines.
Step 3:Get a piece of paper that is a little bit bigger and a crayon and put the piece of paper and roll it over it.
Step 3: Get ink and again a piece of paper that is a little bit bigger and put it on top and roll the ink on it.

Here are some photos of my Samoan art.

Makey Makey

Makey Makey is a very technological thing. You can do just about anything but only with certain games like Super Mario, a piano game and Pacman. At the start I was like what is this but when I tried it, it was really easy.

Here is a video about what you can do with a Makey Makey.

Here are some pictures of the Makey Makey board and when it is set up.

Production

This term we have been doing production. For some people it was a bit hard and for others it was fairly easy but we all got through it. On the first night I was scared, excited and nervous. But on the second night I was not as scared because I knew what was coming. There were Mummies, Pharaohs, Cleopatras and the king. So here is some pictures.

This is me.

My artwork

In room 18 we have been doing alot of art like Korowri, Koru art with me my Mum, Dad and my brother on it and my name art. Here are three of my art works.

Here is my first art work. It is my koru art. The four koru represents my family. I'm the yellow one, the two red ones are my mum and dad and the purple one is my brother. How I made it: I practised making korus in my art book, a lot of times. Then I got black pastol and drew the outline of all of the korus. Then coloured them in with pastel. Then I used dye for the background.

This is my name artwork. It has my name on it and I called it a racing chicken because it has black and white flags on it and it looks like a chicken. How I made it: I folded the paper, spelt my name without linking it and then somehow linked all the words together and put vivid on it. I used the fold and put it on the window and traced it with a pencil. Then put vivid around the name. Then I colored it in.

This is something that I did on my Chromebook. It is things that I like, it has four personality traits and four things that I like. How I made it: I found a cool background and put it on the Google Slide. Then I went on cool text and put 4 things that I like and 4 personality traits. Then searched up icecream, Minecraft, Roblox and Nyan cat. Then put the cool text things under ,on top or even beside and then put a photo of me in.

Camp Writing

Straight after the April holidays, from Wednesday 2nd May to Friday 4th May. I went on camp to Spencer Park with the Year 5s from my class and Room 20. Some of the things we did were orienteering, hut building, jumping on a big bouncy pillow and we went to the beach. My highlight from camp was Adrenalin Forest. Here are my two pieces of writing about my time at camp. I hope you enjoy them.

Remember when

Remember when.... We made huts out of twigs and branches off the ground and had a picture in it.
Remember when... we played spotlight in our cabins but there was not much space.
That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park.

Remember when…I got stuck on the Adrenalin Forest because I did not put the clip on properly.
Remember when...we all looked out the window while the big pillow was deflating.
That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park.

Remember when...I went super fast on the zipline and just sat there waiting to hit the bag on the tree.
Do you Remember when...we pushed everyone off the pillow so that we could have more space.
That was my 2018 camp to Spencer Park.

MY CAMP CHALLENGE
I heard kids ziplining along the carabiners.

I heard kids screaming when they were on the really high bits.

I saw kids ziplining down the zipline.

I felt air blowing in my face while i went down on my carabiner.

I felt my legs freezing when I went down the wires.

I wondered if I would turn back on Level 2..

I wondered if I would get stuck in the tree.

Maths: Multiplication

This term our class has been doing more Problem Solving. We were learning how to solve multiplication problems by using different strategies.

On Thursday we used an app on the iPad called Explain Everything. This app is an interactive whiteboard that allows us to collaborate, write, record and share our maths thinking.

My maths mate and I decided to share how we solved the following multiplication problem. We used the strategy of place value.

We hope you enjoy our maths tutorial.

Please comment below if you learnt something new from our video.

Storybird Poetry Anthology

This term Jackson’s Studio has been writing lots of different poems. Over the last week we have been publishing our poems on a website called Storybird. On Storybird we turned our poems into a book called Poetry Anthology, because an anthology is a collection of poems.

Here is my book which my haiku, diamante, cinquain, acrostic, my James K Baxter inspired poem and two sense poems. Can you guess which poem is which?

I hope you enjoyed reading my poems. What one was your favourite?

Chapter Chat - There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom

This term we have been part of Chapter Chat, a twitter based book chat. We have read a book called ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ which is about two boys Bradley & Jeff. A counsellor came to the school and at first Bradley hated the counsellor. But when he had another visit the counsellor gave him some advice.

Every Friday we went on Twitter with other schools in New Zealand that are also part of Chapter Chat. When we are on Twitter we answered questions in small groups about what we had read in the last week. Each week we also had to complete at least one quality Chapter Chat activity to share on Twitter.

This is one of my activities where I have completed what I thought the parents garage would look like in the book. It has white dots with a purple background.

This is my second activity where Lachlan and I made a cake with orange and blue strips under it. It was Colleen's birthday cake except our version of it.

What one was your favourite? Mine was the birthday cake because working with a buddy is very easy.

Haiku poem

In Jackson's Studio, as part of our poetry unit for writing we have been learning how to write a haiku poem. A haiku poem is a popular Japanese poem that traditionally has three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

We took our notebooks into the playground and brainstormed words associated with an object. I chose the slide because it was the most easiest thing I could do.

Next we came inside and composed our haiku poem using a website.

Here is mine, I hope you enjoy it.
